âWe were looking for a play that fits with our YU values, that is fun and entertaining, and with an ensemble cast that gives actors a chance to develop interesting characters,â said Elisheva Hirsch â23S, president of the Stern College Dramatics Society (SCDS), who stars as the Sherlock Holmsian Detective Trotter. âThe Mousetrapââthe worldâs longest-running playâfits the bill, and includes the involvement of over 40 Stern College students, from acting to set design, tech production and costumes. The show is directed by Leah Gottfried â14S, Sternâs first film major and the creator of the comedic web series âSoon by Youâ and founder of production company Dignity Entertainment.
While SCDS had its first post-Covid show in 2021, this yearâs production showcases a truly rebuilt theater companyâone that has been giving Orthodox women a stage since the 1950s. Indeed, SCDS prides itself on its professionalism, and âThe Mousetrapâ connects Stern studentsâand audiencesâto the showâs rich history. âThe surprise ending is one of the most well-kept secrets in the theater world,â Hirsch said. At the end of each show, the person revealed to be the murderer steps forward and tells the audience to ââkeep the secret of whodunit locked in your heart,ââ she explained. âWe ask that, too.â
